Dibs vs SignUp.com

SignUp.com is a capable, volunteer-focused tool whose free plan already skips participant passwords and lets people swap shifts. It shows ads unless you buy a separate ad-free upgrade, and waitlists and text reminders are paid. Dibs has no ads and includes waitlists for free, but it has no text messages, check-in or hours tracking.

SignUp.com, which started life as VolunteerSpot in 2009, is one of the main alternatives people find when they leave SignUpGenius. It says more than 35 million people have used it. It is a well-made tool, and on some points its free plan is more generous than SignUpGenius's. Here is how it compares with Dibs, based on SignUp.com's own pricing and help pages as of October 18, 2026.

The short version

SignUp.com is the better pick for volunteer programs that need text reminders, check-in on the day or hours tracking. Its free plan already lets participants sign up without a password and swap shifts.

Dibs is the better pick if you want no ads without paying for an upgrade, and waitlists and per-person limits included for free.

Where SignUp.com is better

Text messages. Paid plans include unlimited SMS reminders in the US, Canada and Australia. For volunteers who ignore email, that matters. Dibs sends email only.

Running the day. Check-in, lock and unlock, waivers and hours tracking are useful for food banks, races and hospitals that need a record. Dibs has a printable sheet and a CSV export, and that is all.

Schools at scale. Campus plans give a K-12 school 150 organizer upgrades from $99 a year. Dibs has no school-wide plan.

Payments. SignUp.com can collect money through Stripe or PayPal. Dibs cannot.

Where Dibs is better

No ads, without an add-on. SignUp.com's help page says the ad-free upgrade removes picture and video ads on sign-ups, ads in participant emails and sponsored offer checkboxes on the sign-up screen. It costs $9.99 a month or $99.99 a year, on top of any premium plan. Dibs has no ads on any sheet.

Waitlists and fair limits for free. On SignUp.com, waitlist notification and limiting spots per participant start at the Starter plan. On Dibs, a full slot offers a waitlist, and the next person moves up automatically when someone cancels. You can also cap how many slots one person takes.

Type a list, get a sheet. You paste plain text, like "Sat 9-11am: Sorting x6", and Dibs builds the slots as you type. No organizer account is needed to start.

A light page. The sign-up page is plain HTML with a little script, built for older phones and in-app browsers.

Which should you pick?

Pick SignUp.com if you need text reminders, check-in, hours tracking or school-wide plans, and you are happy to pay for ad-free.

Pick Dibs if you want a sheet with no ads and a working waitlist, for free, and email reminders are enough.
